What is FTP?

http://live.pirillo.com/ - A user in the chat room want's to know what FTP is and how to use it. FTP - File Transfer Protocol - is a protocol that lets computers transfer files from one computer to another. Unlike the HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP), it doesn't describe how the file data should be displayed, just how it is transferred.

Most browsers can use FTP as well is you use the uniform resource locator "ftp://" - but the functionality is usually limited to browsing and downloading.

Chis Recommends WinSCP, which does FTP, SFTP, and SCP.

Some people also recommend CuteFTP, though it's shareware.

SmartFTP is nagware, reminding you to register every time you start the program, but it has a solid UI.

Filezilla is an open source FTP client, but suffers the same UI problems that plague a majority of open source applications.

FireFTP is an FTP client for the Mozilla Firefox browser.

Does anyone else have a recommendation?
