http://live.pirillo.com/ - Sometimes it's difficult to know what's wrong with a wireless network, especially if your connection randomly drops out for not apparent reason.

Andre, a new community member, has some advice for people using OS X. Under Max OSX you can use Airport Radar to help you diagnose your WiFi problems: you can find out what channels are being used and which channel you can use to avoid potential interference.

If you're using Windows, NetStumbler will allow you to do basically the same thing: diagnose the wireless connection and find out what's going on so you can get a clear signal.

PDF Viruses

http://live.pirillo.com/ - In the past few days there have been a large number of e-mails with PDF attachments, but the e-mail isn't from anyone we know. Is it spam or something sinister?

One of our community members became concerned when his antivirus software did not filter out the PDF files, because he was convinced that they were nothing more than a virus driveby.

SecureComupting.net.au reports that there is a round of PDF spam going around, in an attempt to get around most spam filters, since PDF files are generally not filtered.

The good news is that is isn't a virus, the bad news is that it's spam.

Nokia N800 Mobile Device

http://live.pirillo.com/ - Thoughfix, a regular community member, saw Chris and Scoble chatting about the iPhone and he thought he would chime in with information on a new device that might just beat the iPhone for mobile web surfing.

The Nokia N800 is a device that some people say is actually better than the iPhone:

• It is built on Linux, so there are a ton of applications out there already out there.
• It comes with Opera 8, a full-fledged web browser with Flash 7.
• Supports WiFi or a dial-up connection via Bluetooth.
• Supports a full QWERTY keyboard via Bluetooth.
• Comes with an integrated webcam and microphone for Internet calling via Skype (which means you can use SkypeOut as your phone service!)
• Full Instant Messaging and E-Mail clients.

Basically, it's a Tablet PC without the bulkiness of a notebook, or the near-minuscule size of a cell phone.

More Vista Problems

Sabayon Linux

http://live.pirillo.com/ - Beryl is, by far, one of the best 3D desktop managers, period. Of course, setting up and configuring Beryl can be somewhat complicated. Thankfully, there's Sabayon Linux, a free Live CD distribution of Linux.

As a Live CD distribution, Sabayon never touches your hard drive so you don't have to worry about losing data, hard drive formatting, and other issues that come about from switching operating systems. Of course, you could always install Sabayon on your machine and not worry about booting from a CD.

What's really cool about Sabayon is that it comes with all of the drivers and software installed and configured so you don't have to mess around with any configuration files to get the beautiful Beryl desktop to work.

DVI vs VGA

http://live.pirillo.com/ - Quill in the chat room wants to know if there's a way to convert a DVI connection to VGA or, failing that, a way to convert an S-Video port to VGA.

First, don't bother trying to convert S-Video to VGA: it's just not going to be a good experience for you.

If you need to convert DVI to VGA, just pick up a DVI-to-VGA adapter. They're generally pretty cheap - so cheap that most video cards come with a free adapter.

What's the difference between DVI and VGA? DVI is a digital connection, whereas VGA is an analog signal, so you get a slightly higher quality signal with DVI than with VGA.

Generally, you'll find DVI connections on LCD monitors as they handle the video signal in pure digital form, while CRT monitors will use VGA because the video signal remains analog through the entire monitor.

What is Information Overload

http://live.pirillo.com/ - There is a ton of information out there on the Internet, but how do you handle it? How do you actually consume all of the information?

If you're asking yourself those questions then you are suffering from information overload, and the best way to deal with it is to try and filter out the crap that comes through and focus only on the gold.

There are a lot of websites out there that offer a ton of information on a daily basis - such as TechMeme and Digg - but most of the stuff they publish will not interest you, so don't use them for information: filter them out.

Another technique Chris uses is to listen to his circle of friends: if he gets five friends pointing him to the same thing then he checks it out and reads into it.

Handling information overload is a difficult filtering process, but it's becoming a necessary part of our daily digital lives.
